Cuba reports highest number of active Covid-19 cases

A total of 1,916 patients were admitted to hospitals with Covid-19 in Cuba, the highest number of active cases in the country since the pandemic broke out.

Dr. Francisco Duran, national director of Epidemiology at the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP), explained that 1,898 of the patients are evolving stably, while 10 are in serious condition and eight are critical.

So far 148 people have died from complications associated with the disease, although none of them died on Wednesday.

In addition, 142 patients were discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours, bringing up to 11,390 (84.5 percent of confirmed cases) the number of people who have recovered from the disease in Cuba.

A total of 11,396 diagnostic tests were studied on Wednesday throughout the national territory, and 314 of them turned out positive.

These figures bring the total number of samples taken since last March to 1,553,574, and the number of confirmed cases with coronavirus is 13,479.

Of the new cases reported, 301 are Cubans and 13 are foreigners, 205 were contacts of confirmed cases, 75 were infected abroad and in 34 cases, the source of contagion is under investigation, Dr. Duran explained.

He explained that the contacts of confirmed cases are the group with the highest risk, for which there is persistence on conducting a strict follow-up.

Dr. Duran added that 162 of all 314 new cases were asymptomatic when the PCR test was made. He insisted on strict compliance with protection measures to prevent outbreaks and control the pandemic.
