With a renowned work in the treatment of seeds with physical methods in Cuba, the Jorge Dimitrov Agricultural Research Institute, of Granma, has the mission this year to revitalize this scientific achievement, which contributes so much to food production.
The Academy of Sciences Award 2008, the important research is adapted to the current circumstances and the productive demands imposed by the current economic situation of the country, to promote the agricultural food program in the province.
Specifies the Doctor of Science Lizet Chávez, an outstanding researcher at this scientific center, who is experimented on in several productive bases with crop mutations and stimulation by physical methods of seeds, with yields above 20 percent compared to those achieved without applying these experiments.
She works to increase the yields and also the tolerance of different crops to adverse conditions of abiotic stress, including salinity, drought and high temperatures, which hit so hard this eastern part of Cuba.
In this regard, she noted that the results of these researches are promoted through agricultural fairs in rural areas, with the participation of producers from all over the province and where varieties of these crops are exhibited.
She also, highlighted as an essential premise, the extension of these practices to several agricultural cooperatives, with the aim of improving crop yields and thereby contributing to the province’s agricultural-food program.
