On January 4, 1984, the Family Doctor and Nurse Program was created in Cuba, with the aim of bringing health services closer to neighborhoods and communities.
The Commander in Chief Fidel Castro´ s idea to create a different doctor and a new specialist, in order to reach new levels of health and greater satisfaction for the population, achieves in the family doctor.
The specialty of Comprehensive General Medicine in different degrees did not wait in the university classrooms and the young doctors recent graduated immediately shared the importance of this program since the beginning.
Throughout these 37 years, there are clearly results among them; the reduction of infant and maternal mortality, the increase of the average age and to enhance the quality of life in the population, at the same time that a better sanitary hygiene culture has been achieved.
Public health changed its organization and its methods, since it placed the family doctor are in charge of the health of individuals, families and the environment, with the premise of preserving it from bureaucratic schemes, of keeping it in direct contact with its population and maintain its totally dedication to work.
