Cuban scientists seek specific vaccine against Covid-19

Cuban scientists are working together to design a specific vaccine against Covid-19, as part of a project that is necessary to achieve immunity against the SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus, which causes the disease.

In order to achieve that goal, they are working in four vaccine candidates that are being tested in various hosts (mammals’ cells, yeast and different bacteria), Gerardo Guillen, director of Biomedical Research at the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Center (CIGB), said on Monday.

Creating a specific vaccine is a great challenge for researchers and a need, because for the first time a pandemic has been controlled by taking isolation measures, so a large part of the population will be susceptible to the virus as they did not have contact with it, the experts said on the Mesa Redonda radio and television program.

We are working fast to develop an injectable vaccine as soon as possible, but making a prediction is delicate, because first we have to obtain the viral sequences, express those antigens in different hosts, and carry out purification processes and quality controls, Guillen noted.
