Cuba manages return of doctors a year after their kidnapping in Kenya

Havana-. Cuba’s government is maintaining the efforts for the safe return of its doctors Assel Herrera and Landy Rodriguez, kidnapped a year ago a day like today in Kenya.

Contact at the highest level was established from the beginning with exchanges between Cuba’s President Miguel Diaz-Canel and his counterparts from Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, and from Somalia, Abdullahi Mohamed.

Diaz-Canel reported yesterday that he spoke with the physicians’ relatives and assured them that they continue working on their return, despite the global pandemic.

Both healthcare professionals were kidnapped on April 12 while on their way to Mandera hospital, near the border with Somalia.

The only thing that is known so far is that both are fine.

Herrera, a specialist in Comprehensive General Medicine in Las Tunas province (east), and Rodriguez, a surgeon from Villa Clara (center) province, are part of the Cuban medical mission in Kenya.

The authorities reiterate that Cuba does not leave its citizens alone; therefore, the task is to continue working until they return safely to the homeland.
