The rice planting corresponding to the spring period began in the province of Granma, the largest producer of the grain in Cuba, with the challenge of recovering more than six thousand hectares pending for sowing in the cold season.
The producers of Granma have to work hard to achieve the plan during the current harvest, which should run until the beginning of August, the sowing of more than 25 thousand hectares, among which are the 19 thousand 307 planned and the six thousand 097 pending, due to the fuel shortage and lack of fertilizers, as the Granma newspaper reported.
For this purpose, alternatives are implemented such as the resettle of the fuel assigned to the Education and Tourism sectors, which are currently inactive, to this important branch.
In addition, farming with animal draught will be put into practice in the land of small producers and in smaller areas linked to the Cuba-Vietnam collaboration projects, told Jorge Luis López Reyes, agricultural sub-delegate of the Provincial Delegation of Agriculture.
He pointed out that despite the setbacks of planting during the cold season, in the first two months of 2020, the province delivered three thousand tons of rice, from the two thousand tons agreed, for the Ministry of Domestic Trade directed to the basic family basket.
López Reyes highlighted that “the campaign has just begun and there are stability in the water supply and a significant part of the inputs and technology, so we can also aspire to comply with the annual plan of 58,500 tons of rice ”.
The province of Granma assumes, in this program, about 30 percent of the consumption rice produced in the country.
Of the two enterprises that it has for such efforts, the Fernando Echenique Agroindustrial Grains, the main producer of the cereal in the field, is in charge of the task, whose state plan is 39 thousand tons for this year; meanwhile, the José Manuel Capote Sosa enterprise has planned some 19,500 tons, said the manager.
