JIGUANÍ, Granma.- The inhabitants of the municipality of Jiguaní, in the eastern province of Granma, benefit after the reopening of two health centers that were full restored, with the aim of strengthening preventive actions and health promotion.
Eliecer Hernández Palomo, director of the David Moreno polyclinic, in Santa Rita, told the press that replacing harmful habits to increase the quality of life of some 998 inhabitants is the essential mission of the family doctor and the nurse office located in Cuatro Caminos, an isolate rural settlement.
Also, he said, once a month, specialists in other branches of medicine, such as Stomatology, Podiatry, Optics and Optometry, will provide their services there; according to the main needs of the settlers.
He reported that among the problems identified in Cuatro Caminos, teenage pregnancy, smoking, alcohol consumption and increase in chronic non-communicable diseases, such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus, stand out.
Danni Arias Moreno, in charge of the center for five months, appreciated the investment as very positive, which besides to the restoration, improved the furniture and the general conditions of the facility.
The young doctor, who is in the second year of the specialty of Comprehensive General Medicine, said that he frequently visits homes and offers guidance to neighbors, including boiling the drinking water and extreme hygienic measures.
After a full remodeling, the Esperanza Acosta García maternal home of the town of Jiguaní also provides services, with capacity for 20 pregnant women.
Rosa Marilín Álvarez García, municipal health director, stressed that this institution will contribute to maintain and improve the health indicators of the territory, where the number of children born alive increases and the infant and maternal mortality rates are maintained at zero.
The low birth weight index also decreases, and priority is given to infertile couples, from which three clinical pregnancies have been achieved there so far this year, she added.
