The first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), Raúl Castro, received today a group of doctors from the island who worked in the More Doctors Brazilian program.
The professionals were also welcomed by the second secretary of the Central Committee of the PCC, José Ramón Machado Ventura, the vice president Roberto Morales and the minister of Health, José Ángel Portal, among other authorities.
Cuba announced on November 14 the decision not to continue participating in More Doctors, given the hostile stance of the Brazilian president-elect, Jair Bolsonaro.
The politician, who will take office on January 1, advanced his intention to force the Cuban doctors to revalidate the title and individual contracting, ignoring the agreements that made the beginning of the initiative promoted by the then head of state possible in 2013, Dilma Rousseff.
The Cuban Foreign Ministry warned that all responsibility for the damage created in terms of health for the most vulnerable Brazilians falls on Bolsonaro with his disrespectful position towards the government and Cuban collaborators.
In the five years of More Doctors, about 20 thousand physicians of the island attended to 113 million Brazilians, many of them never before benefited by primary assistance in favelas (poor urban areas), indigenous districts and the Amazon.
