With positive viability, weight and uniformity indicators in the chicks breeding for the replacement of laying hens, the Mancabo Base Business Unit (UEB) contributes to the productive stability of the Poultry Company of the eastern province of Granma.

Based in the municipality of Guisa, the workforce made up of 49 workers works under strict technical and biosafety rules, with the aim of fulfilling an annual plan of 671,000 birds, of which 176,000 have already been delivered in a first breeding.

Centers like this have the responsibility of achieving a good start of the production chain, through a management that ensures optimal growth of the laying hens, and avoid possible deaths from prolapses or other disorders, said Aliuska Torres Llopiz, director of the UEB.

The newborn chicks come from incubation plants of several territories of the country, and here we assume the breeding among one and 56 days, until they reach a 630 grams weight and are moved to the development units, she explained.

It is a very technical work and, above all, we should like it, because every day requires knowledge, enthusiasm and total dedication, highlighted the active woman, Degree in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Granma.

Under resource limitations and other material difficulties, the entity owns a total of 20 warehouses, of which only 15 are currently using, and annually makes four breeding procedures, in January, April, July and November.

Linked to the poultry activity, they have 62 sheep, a pig farm and eight hectares for the sowing of several agricultural products, all destined for the self-consumption of the UEB and the company, added Torres Llopiz.

With 15 years of experience, and about to deliver a new lot of chicks, Sandra García Valdés stressed the importance of mastering technical rules of disinfection, mortality and food, as well as pay attention to the health condition of the birds.

The tenacity to achieve good results and ensure production involves finding alternatives, such as the use of medicinal plants in the lack of medicines, she stressed.
