Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel received James McGovern, a US Democratic congressman, who recently described his country’s policy toward the island as erroneous.
The meeting was also attended by Matthew Bonaccorsi, McGovern’s legislative assistant, and former Congressman William Delahun, while on the Cuban side there were, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez and the U.S. General Director of the Foreign Ministry, Carlos Fernandez de Cossio.
The day before, the congressman also held a meeting with the Cuban Foreign Minister, who thanked him for his work and that of other members of the U.S. Congress to achieve a constructive work in favor of improving relations between the two countries.
Rodriguez also recalled that the economic, commercial and financial blockade continues to be the main obstacle to Cuba’s development and to the advancement of bilateral ties.
He also ratified the willingness to continue working with all those who represent the majority sentiment of both peoples, Cuban emigration and the international community.
On Thursday from the Raul Roa Garcia Higher Institute of International Relations, the visitor affirmed that his country’s policies towards Cuba are erroneous, meaningless and that the people of the island do not deserve to suffer for this.
‘We have come to extend the hand of solidarity to Cuba, to build bridges,’ the congressman told reporters.
‘We want the blockade to be lifted, to end travel bans and to re-establish the normal functioning of the embassies, in order to make visa applications less cumbersome,’ he said.
He considered that even with the current travel bans, more U.S. citizens and politicians should come, because they should know how great Cuba is and how welcome they will feel.
McGovern is chairman of the Rules Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives and is in the Caribbean nation accompanied by a representation from the New England Council made up of public and private sector organizations from the New England area.
This territory includes the six northeastern states: Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.(PL)
