The president of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel, highlighted here on Monday the role of the labor movement in two priorities the country has: preparation for the defense and economic development.
The head of government, referring to the components of the economic battle, stressed the need to concretize the productive chain with tourism and other sectors, promoting sustainable local development.
Diaz-Canel added that local development produces an increase in salaries, an improvement in the standard of living of the population of the territory and favors food sovereignty.
Among other issues, the economic commission analyzed how to produce more and import less, and emphasized concentrating on financing and industry, the development of local projects and guaranteeing productive chains.
Since his inauguration a year ago, Diaz-Canel has repeatedly said that one of the country’s priorities is the economic battle.
The strategy is to work tirelessly with alternatives already designed, without abandoning the objectives set in terms of greater welfare for our people, said the president at the closing of the third extraordinary session of the National Assembly of People’s Power on April 13.
Gathered in five groups at the Havana Convention Center, more than one thousand delegates to the union congress analyzed the work of the organization as an indispensable premise to guarantee its leadership and the contribution of the workers to the efficiency demanded by the national economy.
The challenges of the workers’ movement in the face of transformations in the labor context linked to the growth and diversification of non-state forms of management, and the representation and defense of workers’ rights and duties, are other topics to be discussed.
Under the slogan Unity, Commitment and Victory, the event is scheduled to end next Wednesday.
Inaugurated over the weekend, 52 foreign delegates from 30 trade union organisations of 16 countries in Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa are also taking part in the 21st CTC Congress.
