The International Day of the Elderly, sponsored by the World Health Organization every October 1st, has special connotations.
The specialized organizations of the United Nations demand in their states policies of special care to the elderly people, aiming to raise their life expectancy and exceed the 45 years as happened in some countries.
The wars and armed conflicts, as well as the exploitation to which some nations are subjected, and the lack of a proper medical care contribute to the decline of life levels, which prevents raising the average of life expectancy.
Even with a blockade for more than 50 years, Cuba maintains a costly health system that has raised the average life of its people to 79 years old.
The last population and housing census yielded an impressive figures of men and women who are over 80, 90 and 100 years old.
That is why in the World Day for the Elderly in Cuba several activities are carried out.
In Bayamo, prior this date, the members of the Red Club and the Carlos Blanco of sports, carried out a tour to the Cupaynicu Botanical Garden of the mountainous municipality of Guisa.
Sponsored by the local government, during the meeting a special recognition was granted to one of the founders of the group and who directed it for more than 10 years, Rafael Lafita Espinosa.
The Red Club of Bayamo consists of retired people, who remain active, and some of them perform as popular inspectors fulfilling several tasks assigned by the government.
Some of the members exceed the 80 years old and there are militants of the Cuba Communist Party (PCC) and internationalists. They are faithful to the party and to Fidel.
The International Day for the Elderly is dedicated to honor, respect and care for the world’s elderly. It was established during the 45th session of the United Nations in 1990 and was celebrated for the first time on October 1, 1991.
