A life-size wax sculpture of Jesús Orta Ruiz, the Indio Nabori, was unveiled last Saturday at the Wax Museum of Bayamo, as part of the activities of the 24th edition of the Festival of Cuban Identity.

Ismary López Comas, director of the cultural institution, during the ceremony read a letter of gratitude on behalf of Fidel Antonio Orta, director of the Office of Cultural Promotion and Research on the work of the poet, and one of his son.

The Indio Nabori renewed the sung and written décima, enlivened the elegy, he left a significant imprint on folklore researches, he highlighted in the letter.

He added that Jesus Orta Ruiz is a chosen one of the people of Cuba, it is not a coincidence and imposed, but is a sample of Cuban and national identities.

He thanked on behalf of all the descendants of that National Prize for Literature, to the Barrios ‘family, authors of the piece that shows the poet dressed in his white guayabera.

 

The sculpture was unveiled by Alpidio Alonso Grau, Minister of Culture, and the highest political and governmental authorities of Granma.

At the meeting, the singers Emiliano Sardiña, Marisol Guillama, and Toni Iznaga, sang décimas by the Indio Nabori, and improvised verses dedicated to him.

The Wax Museum, unique of its kind in the country, is one of the main attractions of the Bayamo city, and exhibits statues of the heroes Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, and José Martí, along with those of the novelists Ernest Hemingway and Gabriel García Márquez.

Some figures of Cuban music stars such As: Juan Formell, Rita Montaner, El Guayabero, Benny Moré, Polo Montañez, Sindo Garay and Compay Segundo are also modeled in wax; the legendary boxer Teófilo Stevenson.
